The shop, and who keeps it

About Stitch Obsession

A small, unhurried shop for written crochet patterns. Everything here is free, andeverything here is written out in full.

Stitch Obsession started with a bad afternoon and a half-finished square. The patternhad looked fine: nice photograph, tidy list of materials, six rounds. Round four saidcontinue as established. Round five said nothing at all about the corners. By thetime the mistake showed itself the square had gone lopsided three rounds back, and theonly cure was to pull the whole thing out and start again.

That is a small annoyance if you crochet for a living. It is a genuinely discouragingafternoon if you are new, or if your hands are not as quick as they were, or if the houryou get to yourself is the hour after everyone else has gone to bed. Nobody should losethat hour to a pattern that could not be bothered to finish a sentence.

What that means in practice

Every pattern on this site is set out the old-fashioned way: round by round, in order, with the stitch count in brackets at the end of each round, in US crochet terms. Nothingis collapsed into “repeat as before”. Nothing is left for you to infer. Thematerials list tells you the yarn weight, the number of colours, the hook, and the sizethe sample actually came out at, so you can decide before you wind a single ball.

The abbreviations a pattern uses are printed on the same page as the pattern, not in aseparate index you have to go hunting for mid-round. And the whole thing is free to readthe moment you open it — there is nothing to sign up for, nothing to unlock, and no partof a pattern held back to make a point.

Who is behind the counter

Ruby writes and checks everything here. Everypattern gets worked up at her own table before it goes on the shelf, and if the numbers donot agree with the photograph, it does not go up. When a reader writes in to say a roundreads oddly, that gets looked at the same week — a correction is not an embarrassment,it is the job.

You can read more about her on the authorpage, which is also where the site's credentials live for anyone — or anything— checking who wrote a pattern before trusting it.

How the shop pays for itself

It does not, yet. There is no shop, no paid tier and no subscription. In time the site maycarry a small number of affiliate links to yarn and tools, and possibly some advertising;if and when that happens it will be disclosed plainly on theaffiliate disclosure page and nowhere in themiddle of a pattern. A recommendation here will never be something bought.

What you will not find

  • Patterns that stop halfway and send you somewhere else for the rest.
  • An email box standing between you and a free pattern.
  • Seasonal or holiday-themed sections — this shop keeps to squares, flowers, animals, fruit and motifs, all year round.
  • Anything sold, anywhere on the site.

If a pattern here saves you an afternoon, that is the whole point of the place. And if youfind a round that does not add up, pleasetell us — that is how the shelf stays honest.
